VIPKID is my primary side hustle, and has generated consistent monthly income all while working from home. You may have seen Facebook ads about this company before or heard about it.
I have to admit to being skeptical, before I worked for VIPKID. My first encounter was through Facebook ads. It all sounded too good to be true. Obviously, I was intrigued because I already teach and I am the side hustle queen, but it just didn’t seem real. So I kept it moving.
Then I heard about some coworkers that gave it a try and saw some people sharing about the legitimacy of the company. Ain’t nobody got time for ponzi schemes, been there done that so I had to verify for myself. Last year, I decided to leave Atlanta and move back to my native Cleveland to stack a little money and just get refreshed (sharing that down the line). I knew I needed a side hustle that was stress free, fun and good money so I went for it.
Yall…..yall….I said YALL! Sorry didn’t mean to yell, but I need you to understand how this was one of the best decisions I made last year. Becoming an independent contractor for VIPKID has been life changing! Not only is this job fun and caters to my field of expertise, but I am making decent bank. Even on slower months, I am still able to bring in an ample amount of money. So let me break it down…down.
What is VIPKID?
VIPKID is an online teaching platform in which teachers teach English to Chinese students ages 4-12. The company employs teachers that provide one on one instruction in English to students of varying levels of experience with the language.
All VIPKID classes are 100% online and you can work from home or anywhere! I teach in my home office but I have also taught at friend’s houses and in hotels. VIPKID is a reputable company and was even listed #1 on Forbes list of Top 100 Remote companies to work for in 2018.
It’s the real deal.
So what is required?
There are some basic requirements for working for the company, but they’re super simple.
- A native English speaker
- Possess ANY four year degree (any field)
- At least 1 year of experience with teaching children (classroom experience, coaching, parent volunteer, home school mom, tutoring, day care etc.)
- Computer and headset with high speed internet connection
That’s it! Remember your degree doesn’t have to be in Education. In fact, I know more that 50% of VIPKID teachers are not classroom teachers at all and hold full time jobs in other fields. Many VIPKID teachers are stay at home moms, and then there are those like me that are also classroom teachers.
If you love kids, have experience teaching and are positive and energetic you can be working from home sooner than you think.
What’s the schedule? How can I do this with a full time job?
That’s the thing. I love this job because you set your own schedule and I am working from home. You can totally do this with a full time job. Being a classroom teacher, I mostly work weekends and then pick up hours on holidays breaks. You will either work really late at night or super early in the morning depending on your time zone. If you are on EST like I am you will most likely work 7:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. (during daylight savings time). These are the times that are booked the most. I typically teach starting at 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. If I’m really on the grind, I will work an overnight shift teaching classes at midnight until 2 a.m.
If you don’t mind burning the midnight oil or waking up with the crows, you can be successful. I tend to teach the earlier classes and then catch a mid morning or afternoon nap.
The best part is you can work when, and for how long you want. Those of you that book hair or nail appointments online, this process works the same way. You set your schedule for the week and then boom parents can book you based on your availability. Work as little or as much as you want…the more you work of course…you get to the money.
What about the coins? How are you paid?
The pay structure is a bit complex so I’ll try to keep it simple. Once hired you will receive a pay rate per class between $7-9, which is determined by how you perform during your mock class. Each class is 25 minutes long. You earn that base pay, plus an extra $1 just for coming to class on time and finishing. You can also earn an extra .50 once you’ve taught 30 classes, and an extra $1 once you’ve taught more than 45 classes for the month. Money can also be earned from successfully converting a trial student, a teacher referral and they are always doing fun challenge incentives that can get you a few more coins too.
My most successful month thus far was December 2018 when I made 1,300. No lie! While I had a few extra days because of holiday break, this was still part time pay. Part time pay dropped right into my bank account. Check out some of my top earning months…thus far (Hoping to make my October 2019 Goal)!

Do you really love it? What’s wrong here?
Short answer….yes I really love it!
Initially, I had some concerns. When I started my research, there were two things I wondered. Do I really have to be so bubbly like the ads? Also….where is the representation (rubs top of my hand)?
As a classroom teacher, I have definitely have my own style and we have fun. Teaching for VIPKID is a bit different. I love it because the lessons are already prepared. All I have to do is bring the content to life and help my students with their comprehension, pronunciation and speaking skills. I didn’t think the way they wanted me to be was my style. But here’s the thing…
Once you’re in, you can develop your own style. Every student and parent doesn’t want bubbly. Some want focused and serious and to stick to the point. You have make your style shine through and that will attract the parents and students you want.
Representation was also a thing. When I started the process, I wondered where were the teachers that looked like me? I knew there were black VIPKID teachers, but I wanted to know if they were successful. During the beginning of my VIPKID career, I happened upon a FB group for Teachers of Color and their support has been truly impactful to my success working from home with VIPKID.
Is it really all good?
Overall…yes. Are there things I don’t like? Of course, as with any type of work one can do. It can be difficult to be booked at first and patience will be key but once they start rolling get ready. The parents will keep you booked and busy.
