Denay Drops Jewels: How it All Began

Determining the name of your blog is a critical step during the launching process. About a year ago, I decided I wanted to get back into blogging. I’ve blogged before…many times. I had a whole site during my freshman year in college and a teaching blog about five years ago. But both were abandoned. The content of the blog I had in college would be comparable to what is now considered a lifestyle blog. I’d venture to say DDJ is the grown up version of that.

As a blogger with experience but one with different goals, I really took my time with choosing a name, and the focus of my blog. I outgrew the blog from college and while I love teaching I don’t want to be confined to only blogging about what’s going on in my classroom. Being confined to one topic was the biggest issue with me being consistent. I am multi-passionate and get the most random ideas at the most random times (singing my heart out in the car, shower, while cooking, on the treadmill) , so I need to be free to write about whatever tf I want. So I settled on lifestyle. I can incorporate my random thoughts and ideas, my side hustles, fitness journey, budgeting, goals and more. I want to share. It’s an outlet for me…but ultimately, I want to connect with my tribe and turn what I’m learning into polished gems for them….and so Denay Drops Jewels was born.

I find it so interesting that my return to this blog falls right around the time that I began birthing the idea of Denay Drops Jewels last year. I have wanted to tell the story of the genesis of this blog for some time now. During that time, the entrepreneurial bug had just hit me after finally having some success with VIPKID. I loved the freedom and flexibility that VIPKID gave me. Even though it comes across as a job, I am an independent contractor. I work for myself and it is up to me how booked I am. I am responsible for marketing myself to parents and students by creating a classroom environment they want to return to again and again. While on a long break from school and teaching a couple of VIPKID classes, I began to imagine what life would be like if I had a flexible schedule. I immediately began to think about my first love…writing. I’ve always been a writer but never knew what kind of writer I wanted to be, what stories I wanted to tell or who the hell would listen to them. Then it hit me….start a blog. You can tell all the stories and potentially develop another source of income. Bloggers are quickly becoming influencers and able to provide for their families by blogging full time. During the research phase, I was so inspired by this, so I quickly started thinking of a name.

I still have the notebook that I wrote down all of my initial ideas for the blog. Well many notebooks (Yes I’m that person with a million notebooks). The ideas for DDJ went into one of my favorites, aptly titled “Ridiculously Good Ideas.”As I said, I was interested in building my income streams so the notebook page has all of the ideas I had for both active and passive income streams. At the bottom of the page, lies a sort of organized list of potential topics and blog names. When deciding on a blog name I started with a blog name generator. I knew I wanted my name in it. I AM my brand but what else? The generator had a couple of generic ideas that I wrote down like “Hey Denay” and “Moments with Denay.” Those triggered some other ideas like “Discovering Denay” and “Denay Always.” None really set ya girl soul on fire. Then it hit me. I liked to the idea and sound of alliteration. So I wrote Denay Drops Jewels. I let out a resounding yasssss ran down stairs to my Grandma and told her the name of my blog. It just had this ring to it and then the blog birthed a concept that I would drop a jewel at the end of each blog post relative to the topic. I loved it. I bought all the jewel things….it was happening!

Thinking about my how blog started took me back to how thrilled I was to write again.  As I type this post I’m invigorated all over again. I’ve let life and the blogging world overwhelm me. That’s dead. I am ready to grow this blog by any means necessary. Beautiful things take time and I have much to learn but I am ready to put that work in. I can be impatient but it is time to apply pressure to this diamond (jewel). Denay Drops Jewels is here to stay. So I leave you with this…
